I never used to dye my hair until I met my wife who is 15 years younger than me. I’m blessed with good genes and my skin is still very supple. Apart from the deep furrows in my forehead from raising my eyebrows when I talk, I have virtually no wrinkles (see photo). Yet I’ll be drawing a state pension quite soon. No smoking and very, very occasional drinking does have its benefits.
So for the last 10 years, I’ve dyed my hair. I started using the JFM, but I stopped after it ruined a Burberry Raincoat when the dye ran from my hair. I contacted JFM and suggested it was a faulty batch, and they didn’t come back to me. It had never done that before. Then I switched to the “David Ginola” permanent colour, because, obviously, I’m worth it. That is what I have on repeat order, though it does require a 30 minute developing time. During that 30mins you end up with drips, if you’re not careful. In contrast, RUSTY’S hair dye mixes into a thick creme, which stays on your hair and doesn’t drip everywhere. That is a MASSIVE plus. I’m constantly being blamed for all manner of colour damage because of dripping dye.
I normally dye my hair, every 3-4 weeks. The before photo is after around 6 weeks because I’ve been very busy. I also like my hair to look natural, which RUSTY’S has managed to do. I also like yo make it look more natural by leaving the sides of my hair a bit peppered. RUSTY’S appears to have done a great job. The real test will be 1) do the pillowcases get it tonight? 2) how long will it stay in? 3) what does it look like when it fades?
In terms of using, the first problem I encountered was I had a defective glove (see pictures). I thought I just needed to blow into the glove to extend the fingers. Then I realised that the middle finger of one of the gloves was missing! Fortunately, we keep disposable gloves in the house. Had I bought this, I would be annoyed. Then there’s the faff of having to squeeze a tube of colour into the developing liquid. Herein lies a problem. You need 3 hands in order to squeeze all the colour out. I had to hold the bottle between my legs which could have resulted in a catastrophe.
Another bone of contention is, that the developing liquid bottle, which you shake to mix with the colour, is too small. What I mean by this is that when you’re shaking it madly, there’s no perception of whether it’s mixing or not. This because a) the bottle is too small and when the colour creme is added it’s full, b) the bottle is opaque, so you can’t see whether it’s mixed or not.
On the plus side the resultant dye creme, is really nice and thick, almost like a paste. This means it stays on your head and doesn’t drip all over your skin. TIP FOR FIRST TIME DYERS: INVEST INA TUB OF VASELINE. If you lightly smear Vaseline around your hairline (all round your skin at the back front and sides) no dye will give your dirty secret away. It’s also extremely important to cover the backs of the ears and the tips (at the top) with Vaseline. The first time I dyed my hair, I didn’t do this and after 30 mins of scrubbing my ears with a nail brush all I got for my troubles was red and black ears rather than just black. I had to lay low for a few days, much to my wife’s amusement.
RUSTY’S is a bit strange in that it says to keep the gloves on when rinsing the colour out. That means having dye covered gloves on for 15 minutes. I binned mine and used my own. RUSTY’S should not be tight and should provide an extra pair, especially since they are £3-£4 more expensive than David Ginola’s brand. To sum up, the real positives are the application is the easiest since it goes on without dripping. The downsides are easily solvable. I developed mine for 15minutes. The recommended time is from 10-15 minutes depending on whether you’ve previously dyed your hair and the coverage you want. In around 3 weeks time, I’ll update this review to compare colour retention.
Got this as a half joke for my dad, who has jet black hair and has some ‘silver’ showing through in his late forties.
After his acceptance, he tried it out and it worked really well.
Really easy to apply and worked quite well. My advice would be not to use too much.
Easy to use. The colour looks nice. The instructions are clear and easily understandable.
This work well, quick and easy to use,
the instructions are clead and really easy to follow. Doesn't drip an doesn' smell strong. The colour is really black, the result is amazing and looks natural. This does make my husband's hair look healthier and thicker. Because the colour is black, I recommend applying a balm or cream to your hairline to avoid staining. Highly recommend.
