Carefully Chosen Ingredients
Hair colour technology is constantly advancing. Working with our chemists we have been able to replace dated, harsh ingredients with gentler safer alternatives, without having any loss of performance.
Here's what you won't find in Rusty's hair colour:
Sodium Laureth Sulphate has been shown to be drying on the skin and hair and is particularly bad for dry, processed or afro hair. It also can be an irritant for people with skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis.
Ammonia is an inexpensive ingredient commonly found in both professional and drugstore brands that allows colour molecules to penetrate the hair’s cuticle. Unfortunately, it’s caustic properties leaves the hair in a compromised, weakened and “roughed-up” condition. It can also accentuate the fading of the hair colour and decrease its longevity.
A potential carcinogen and also linked to cell damage and other cardiovascular issues. No thanks!
Parabens, in their different forms, are another common ingredient found in hair, skincare and even food products. Their use is predominately as a preservative to allow the product to have a longer shelf life by killing any bacteria that otherwise grow.
There are reports that they can lead to skin irritation, hormone disruption and accentuate existing allergies.
Lead acetate has been linked to skin irritation, abdominal cramps, nausea, convulsions, lead poisoning and cancer.
Used in a multitude of products from food packaging to cosmetics, the various forms of this chemical are consistently popping up in articles about the potential health impacts in the press.
You'll find them linked to to asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues.
You won't find them in Rusty's.
What about PPD?
We've done out best to formulate our colour with the highest quality, modern and gentle ingredients and as you can see above, have stripped out dated, undesirable ingredients from our formula where possible.
PPD, (paraphenylenediamine), is a chemical substance very commonly used in oxidative hair dyes and is a key factor in its ability to cover grey hair and also to allow the colour to be permanent.
We've kept our use of PPD in the product as low as possible, and well within the strictly controlled EU guidelines to ensure its safety.
Some other brands claim to be PPD free, however simply replace it with other ingredients which are part of the same family of chemicals called phenylenediamines which can still cause allergic reactions. In fact, you may not be allergic to PPD while still being allergic to these other replacement ingredients. Thats’s why you’ll almost certainly still be required to perform a patch test.
It can also lead to very different performance of the product.
In our view, the benefits of using PPD outweighed the alternatives.
To be safe, simply follow the patch test guidelines which will help determine in advance if you have any sensitivity.
